Go on, go potty for pottery!
Have you always wanted to try ceramics? Is it years since you've touched clay and fancy getting your hands dirty again? Why not try one of our beginners and returners pottery courses? Running on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons, our five week courses give you a perfect grounding in a whole range of handbuilding techniques: pinch pots, coiling, slab building, slip decoration and sgraffito.
And if you've some experience in pottery and have your own ideas for projects but haven't the space or equipment, then our studio time sessions on Tuesday mornings are just what you need. Our expert tutors are on hand to assist and advise, and the cost includes firing of the piece you're working on in the session.
Spectacular Saggar!
We're setting fire to ceramics! This course, running on Tuesday afternoons, and based on a method traditionally done outside, teaches you how to make spectacular surface effects on your pottery pieces.
A saggar is a ceramic container filled with a combination of sawdust, hardwoods, and a variety of combustible materials such as paper, straw, dry weeds, grass, iron and ceramic colourants. When your ceramics work is fired in the kiln inside a saggar pot, with a soft flame and a high temperature, the burning of the combustibles traps carbon on the surface of the work, creating unique and stunning colouring and patterns.
